About

I passd SOA/CAS exam P/1 on March 19, 2012.  On these pages, I will discuss my study experiences, strategies, techniques, difficulties, and victories.  I will also think out loud about the nature of learning in general, and of learning mathematics in particular.

    • There is a flashcard class, that is a little complicated, so I found the class flacards, which is a litle less versatile and also less complicated. You just need to use the \pagesetup{}{} command to tell it how many cards on the page (I used 2 by 5), then the \card{front}{back} command to enter the front and back of each card.

If you would like, I would be happy to post my source code.

  1. Hi, loved your blog post on how you felt after passing P1..I reacted very similarly, I’m sure the people next to me thought I was going through a breakup. I’m wondering if you can send me an email as I am currently studying for exam FM and would like to discuss/trade thoughts. Thanks!

    • So, I just “shared” the deck on the Anki website. Look for the deck “Exam P from Actuarial Study Blog.” You will need LaTeX for the deck. I don’t know if it will be helpful or not. Good Luck. 🙂

  2. Hi

I my name is Elad Smadja, and I run a website called actuaryintraining.com

Lately I have been getting a lot of questions from students as well as school leavers wanting to know more about actuarial work.
It can be very difficult for people outside the profession (and even for junior people in the profession) to understand what actuaries do and the value of the actuarial skill-set & qualification
To help address this I am putting together a series of audio interviews with a range of actuaries and actuarial students.
This idea is to give people insight into the range of actuarial work available, and the different options that are out there for people with an actuarial qualification.

I would really appreciate it if I could have half an hour of your time to conduct a Skype interview, and ask you a few questions about your road to qualifying, your career path, and the kinds of things your job entails. I will also send you a copy of the interview which you can post up on your blog for your audience.

Please will you send through a few dates/times that you have available so we can coordinate diaries.

    Looking forward to catching up.

    Regards
    Elad Smadja
